Plettenberg Bay is Marine-Life-Friendly
We encourage our residents and visitors to be aware of ocean safety at all times.
The Plett Ocean Smart Campaign was launched in October 2022, a public/private initiative with key stakeholders from the greater Plett area including the Bitou Municipality, Plett NSRI Station, and the Plett Tourism Association.
The main objective is to establish awareness and safety protocols related to the ocean and other waterways throughout the Bitou area.

Blue Flag Beaches
Plettenberg Bay has some of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa. The town’s picturesque coastline features pristine, unspoilt sandy beaches. Exploring the many water activities and the underwater world is fun and exciting, as it is home to fish, stingrays, dolphin, seals, sharks and whales.
There are many different beaches to choose from in Plett. Some have lagoon areas for young children and others are hot surfing and bodyboarding spots for the more adventurous. Plett also has six premier Blue Flag status beaches. Please note no dogs are allowed on any Blue Flag beach, at any given time.
Where to walk your best friend
Plett is a celebrated world-class beach destination with 35 km of picturesque coastline, the most unique natural asset for the town. In addition to the 6 Blue Flag status beaches, there are coastal areas classified as Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBA) by Birdlife South Africa.
Maintaining Plett as one of the Garden Route’s premier tourism destinations and keeping our largest economic contributor to the town protected is most important.
MArine Life
Conservation and preservation of our greatest assets; the ocean, waterways, forests, landmarks and wildlife in Plettenberg Bay, makes an ecologically and economically significant contribution to the town.
Sharks, whales, dolphin and other marine life visit throughout the year – more often during the winter months between May and October.
We encourage our residents and visitors to be aware of ocean safety at all times and be respective of our safety tools and respective to the wildlife that also visit our shores.
